opinion: reasons to rejoice

Did the world not rejoice when WWII was over? Because innocents didn't have to die anymore. Because the world was exhausted in fighting a fascist. (At least that fascist didn't die while escaping.)

While many of us Sri Lankans appreciate the recent defeat of a fascist terrorist organization some are of a different view. Some of these views were expressed in Facebook status updates, blog posts and comments. I thought I would offer my view on why I appreciate the recent defeat of the LTTE as a response to these statements.

Since most LTTE propaganda lovers have their own definitions, let me present the English definition of the term Fascism:
"A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism."

I have doubts if the LTTE is defeated completely judging from the protests in Canada and Europe. When WWII ended there were few Nazis roaming about but effectively their propaganda machine and military might was defeated. The German people did not want another Nazi regime. In fact they recent the fact that they ever supported such a regime after seeing the horror the Nazis unleashed on the Jews, Gypsies, Russians, etc.

This conflict has claimed over 70,000 citizens of Sri Lanka, including members of the LTTE. They were all Sri Lankan citizens. The difference is that they were unfortunate to be subjected to fascism.

If one sees the LTTE as rebels then it is only fair to assume their sentiments of sympathy towards the LTTE. Children as young as 9 were stripped of their education. Many civilians escaped from the LTTE during the last stages of the war. The LTTE leadership ordered their carders to shoot the fleeing civilians. Would you call such a movement a rebellion?

Based on the progress made in the Eastern province, I am hopeful that North will also prosper. With schools, roads, electricity and water supply, telecommunication, Internet, etc. None of which the LTTE rebels bothered to offer during their rule. However the LTTE leadership enjoyed a life of luxury in their air conditioned bunkers and swimming pools.

I am rejoicing because I see this as an end of such ruthless fascism and a beginning of prosperity to the people of the North.
